Ganbatte! The Japanese art of moving forward

Book Reviews, November 11, 2024

Ganbatte is another book reinforcing daily habits that align with authentic purpose. This article is a quick summary with ten takeaways.

"Ganbatte!" by Albert Liebermann delves into the Japanese ethos of persistence and resilience, offering practical advice for achieving true success and fulfillment. Here are ten key takeaways from the book:

1. Perseverance as Success's Foundation: At its heart, Ganbatte emphasises that relentless, continuous effort, regardless of obstacles, is essential for long-term success. Persistence outranks both talent and luck. Our quick fix, short attention span culture celebrates talent over persistence to our children's mental health detriment.

2. Embrace the Process: True success lies not just in the destination but in the journey itself. By refining your skills and maintaining consistency, you achieve meaningful progress. I continually tell my daughters 'graft on your craft'.

3. Small Steps, Big Impact: Avoid being daunted by large goals by breaking them into smaller, manageable tasks. Gradual progress can lead to significant achievements. I'm a massive believer in micro breaks, and micro workouts. 5-10min of yoga, push ups, and kettlebell play when completed 2-3 x week adds up to big strength, and mobility gains over a year (when blended in with a structured fitness routine)

4. Resilience Through Failure: Ganbatte teaches that failure is a stepping stone for growth. Each setback offers a chance to learn and emerge stronger. Our kids get taught about a growth mindset at school, although I still see a fear of failure dominant in our youth.

5. Nurture Patience: Success requires time. The Ganbatte mindset values patience and a long-term view, recognising that persistence yields results when aligned with values and purpose.

6. Commitment to Purpose: A clear purpose fuels endurance. Understanding your "why" keeps you motivated during challenging times. The "why" has been made popular by Simon Sinek (author of Start with Why) in the early 2000's. This isn't a new concept. Leaders throughout time have inspired action through living their why, they don't force or manipulate people to act.

7. Discipline Over Motivation: While motivation can waver, discipline and routine drive continuous progress. Depend on daily habits to remain productive even when motivation wanes. Every day is a chance to act in accordance with who you want to become.

8. Embrace Adaptability: Ganbatte involves being flexible and adjusting your approach as needed, finding new paths to overcome challenges without losing sight of your goal. Having the courage to change direction is important

9. Pursue Mastery: Excellence stems from dedicating yourself to mastering your craft. The concept of Kaizen—continuous improvement—aligns with Ganbatte, urging constant growth, constant work. When the work aligns with purpose then burnout is much less prevalent.

10. Strength in Community: Success often requires collective effort. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who share your values and encourage perseverance. Getting up for an early exercise session is easier and more enjoyable when meeting like minded humans. I value my training mates. Find communities, groups, and clubs that will assist in moving you towards a better you.

These principles encapsulate the spirit of Ganbatte—a philosophy of determination, resilience, and continuous improvement applicable to all areas of life. By adopting this mindset, individuals can achieve their goals and thrive despite the inevitable challenges.
